Morco --- errors and foul up's on shipping ?

Ken N wants this to me better know --= he is having a LOT of errors in special order shipping from Morco. PLEASE make a note of this fellow -- Mat Betrim -- Sales Manager at Morco -- ask for him on trying to figure out why you HAD a problem - 800-276-7827 ( order desk )

Mat will have a change -- they will INSIST that THEY do a stock check on every item special ordered by all CQ jobbers ( they do this now with Elsa & Linda on orders they call in

Mat will ask for a list of stores and contact names so when they do have a problem -they know who to call at that store ( this is on Doug McIntosh voice mail )

Mat will see if any request that comes in TOO LATE to be shipped Purolator - will try to go Cardinal ( for our stores ) -- so HINT -- do NOT request Purolator

Mat will watch --and should we get more orders --we can ask Rob Scott on possibility for cross dock shipping ( ps - note - that adds one day to order )

PLEASE let Ken or Greg H know if you have a problem in Morco --we want to make this better

Lankar/mitchell

If anyone has a customer that is using Lankar or Mitchell the "magic number" to make our list price match their's is Cost X 1.5385.This is assuming your customer is using a 35% margin (not markup)from cost to list which is what Auto Barn uses.

More A&I farm info

Ken shares this with us all ...

Greg...can you post on the blog.
I just ordered a power steering pump for a Ford tractor from A&I. I didn't know that they have them available in 2 lines. Identical part #'s except the "economy" line has a dash "e" suffix. I called to ask the difference. One is North
American, the other is offshore. Also got a little inside info from the guy on the order desk. He says do NOT sell the econo line of pump for Massey Ferguson units.
Regards Ken N

Bravo pads - made by Replex

Did you know that BSP pads are Canadian Made by Replex - a MAJOR aftermarket supplier to many other brake lines. They are a major producer of steel backing pads and their own friction mixes - and are one of very few to have their own on site testing lab.

Here is their latest Bravo flyer - you can download and print

Bravo Pad & Shoe list-06

We have been made aware that CARQUEST has stocked many sku's that we didn't know -- Greg G is going t o post more on that.

If you has some special unit -- they have a Toronto warehouse Doug Harden 877-328-0224 ....don;t use them if you are very tight for time --the first few times will probably be very much grief --especially until CARQUEST figure out how to tell us the 1500 sku's they don't list in their computer ...:-)

Here is info from Cdn sales manager and his contact -- FYI ---watch for more from Greg G on missing sku's that we will match to offset for crappy e-cat data.....

Dear Mr. Henderson,
It was a pleasure speaking with you. In regards to our conversation, please find enclosed a PDF file containing a new brochure for the Carquest Bravo friction line.

Regarding drum brake shoe part numbers S703 and S714 they are interchangeable.
Thank you very much for your support.

Keystone price comparisons -- Thanks Auto Barn

Auto Barn is sending photo copies of the Keystone invoice and stapled price compare to the 'new' account that for the most part seems to be higher. IF other stores could also do that --"that would be a good thing" to quote Martha Stewart.

When we get 10 or so -- I will forward on to Toronto. Please concentrate on the items more than $100 if you can. Thanks --with your help we can FIX this problem and make it better for all.

IF you don't report the problem --- well

Sometimes you have to REPORT the damm problem again -- because someone let the ball drop the first time -- case in point on the VIN Decoder in WEB-LINK

Ryan sent the problem back a 2nd time --and it was a charm .... so what problem have YOU spotted but not done anything to fix ??
===========================================
Good Afternoon -

The problem with this VIN lookup has reported to our catalog vendor. They have acknowledged the mapping error and will correct it on the next release.
Thank you for reporting the problem.

Keystone and others with US to Cdn currency issues

Ryan asked ....
Just to add a small footnote, we have an additional issue here; and any border town for that matter. With our dollar being so good right now I find that a lot of Speed and Custom enthusiasts are crossing the border and saving a lot of money. We need to keep that in the back of mind when we talk about pricing.

So I asked Michael at keystone ( National Accounts Manager) ....
Can you explain if you adjust prices for US currency changes? Do you find this cross boarder shopping to be an issue to avoid PST-GST mainly - or do we have issues on US to Cdn currency issues?

Michael writes back ....
Cross border shopping becomes more of an issue the closer our two
currencies get to parity. Often individuals can smuggle something
across the border without paying taxes and duties (something we
obviously can't avoid). We do adjust our prices when there are
fluctuations in the exchange rate. We change it as necessary, which is
usually about 3-5 times a year. Right now we are using 1.156, and as of
today the exchange rate is 1.139. What most people fail to recognize
that you can't actually buy money (cash or Visa) at the bank rate. The
buy rate is usually about 4% higher. So, we are actually cheaper than
the (actual) exchange rate. Also, where are they going to go if they
have a problem? Where will they get the support for the product? If
they forgot to get a part are they going to order it from the US? The
cross border issue will always be there (and internet too). As a bricks
& mortar business you need to convince your customers why buying from
you is better, even if it costs more money. Some people will always be
willing to spend $50 in gas and a half a day to save $50 of the price of
their manifold. They'll also tell all their friends what a good deal
they got. Most people only do this once or twice until they realize
it's not the better way.

Does this help? The fact that Keystone is using a 'fair' US currency exchange rate is appreciated. Comments appreciated.

LANKAR DEMO

Here is a note from Barry ( Greg Guyitt is also testing the Lankar system as well-- )

I had a demo from Brigitte of Lankar today. They have a FREE version of their program available. The main goal of this Lite program is to reach the shops that are still writing invoices.
It will allow them to electronically create invoices, keep customer-vehicle-history records and, for a $25.00 fee ( NOTE from GREG H = I think Barry is wrong on this- the CQ ordering os included --but if you want ANOTHER source - then additional set-ups cost extra ) , allow them to order from Carquest on-line. There is a $149.00/year support fee if the customer wants to order on-line. If they don‚t need on-line ordering they can continue to use the program for no charge. The support fee also allows them to use the hotline for any questions or problems relating to the Lankar program. The free version is designed to give something of value to a shop and hopefully, make them want to move up to the full-blown version.

The full-blown version has a lot of features not in the Lite program.
- Full inventory
- Customer follow-up and marketing
- Accounting, up to, but not including, a trial balance.

Greg H asked me to rate it on a scale of one to ten. My initial reaction is Mitchell would be a 7 and Lankar would be a 9.

The price for the full-blown package is $1299 plus $450 for a multi-user. Support is $300 a year. Lankar will give 6 months interest-free for the initial installation. They will give you all the assistance you need to get the program running to your satisfaction.

Barry Davidson

MSJ wins North American shop award

The CQ link posted this ... sharing here --way to go john Sawatsky and Windsor ....
====================================================================
John Sawatsky Of Windsor, Ontario Named
2006 CARQUEST Excellence Award Winner

RALEIGH, NC (Oct. 9, 2006) -- John Sawatsky, owner of MSJ Automotive Services Ltd. in Windsor, Ontario, has been named the 2006 CARQUEST Excellence Award Winner. He was presented the award Oct. 6 in Orlando, Fla.

The CARQUEST Excellence Award seeks to recognize the independent automobile service business that, through the course of everyday service excellence, exemplifies the professionalism necessary to build public understanding and respect for people working in the auto service industry today.

MSJ is a 9,000 square foot repair facility located in Windsor, Ontario. Along with a repair facility, it has an additional 3,000 square foot building dedicated to emission testing. MSJ employs 12 with 6 licensed technicians and 3 apprentices and is a member of the TECH-NET Professional Auto Service program, which is one of the many solutions CARQUEST Auto Parts provides Sawatsky for his business.

In the November 2005 SSGM Magazine, Sawatsky said, "The (TECH-NET) banner program provides us with an image and gives us a standard to maintain. We have a local Essex County council set up by myself and the local CARQUEST stores, and we meet here three or four times a year to bring everyone up to speed on what TECH-NET is doing. We share ideas and learn what our peers are doing. The image issue is key. Shops need to consistently raise the bar and improve our shops year over year. The worst thing we can do is stand still. The automakers aren't standing still and we can't either."

DNS e-cat -- questionbale logic punishes sloppy users

DNS e-cat requires users to remember to LOG-OUT after using .... hmm ... I don't know about you ...but the ONLY site I ever absolutely remember to log-out is internet banking --all others I just close the window and assume the software does it then or at least is smart enough to 'TIME OUT'

Well -- DNS e-cat doesn't seem to do either ... as a result you will find that you get an error saying that all users have been used ...

E-mail Gislain Rondeau ..... grondeau@dns-2000.com and she can re-set your stores connection. We have PLEADED with them to get this 'dumb' error fixed ( along with support for tab browsers like Firefox )

D&T has run out of users twice ....that I know of ....:-(

Lankar LITE shop software available

The stores have received several demo CD's for Lankar LITE -- a low cost software option. We have asked for more info from Lankar and asked them to feel free to answer with comments ( so check comments - thanks )

Will await more feedback from staff and salesmen once they get a chance to throw the CD in and play -- Barry --can you pass on a comment at some point if-when you get a feel for it.

Have asked Lankar for a comparison chart of features to their normal software and to Mitchell1

Car Care service intervals

Ryan sent me a Car Care service interval page - looks pretty good - especially in the hands of a show that WANTS to promote preventative maintenance ... I printed 3 colour copies and 20 B&W for all stores. Ryan & I have original pdf as well if you want to forward as e-mail. I will post on Worldpac's forum ( CARQUEST JOBBER ) as another place to grab a copy ... this forum required password to enter.

Click here to see FULL PAGE service Schedule (yes - you can save this and re-print)

CAR CARE SAFETY BLITZ

TECH TIRE is hosting a Car Care Safety Ralley on Saturday October 14th 11:am - 1pm. Please make everyone that you know aware of this. Anything that we can do to ensure that this is a success is appreciated.

test - how to link a URL

just a test to see if this is how to link a URL so when you click on it -- you go to the new page

Auto Barn's home page

ah hay --it works ... on third try .... for me that's a near record - call Greg and I can send your a sample to learn from - requires some HTML knowledge - go to any simple web page and look at source ( gasp ...)

Gerry Leaman wants co-operation on planning KYB training

Gerry Leaman is looking for the salesman and store managers to cooperate and call him to arrange time to meet to overview new KYB program --to meet with shop owners to explain program - then to meet with shop tech's to get plan into action ... the first step is the store manager calling Gerry and setting a date for their store .... please

Starting Fluid (Ether Shortage)

Seen on US CQ-LINK ( anyone seen this on the CDN link yet ?? )

FYI - There have been worldwide shortages of ether now for over two years. Ether has many usages including the making of ammunitions and the use of a starting agent for gas and diesel engines. There are only a few world producers and only two in the Unites States, which are producing at or near capacity at this time. Although our supplier did not expect the shortages to be as bad as it currently is we feel this is temporary. We will continue to work with our supplier on alternative sources but will be short on this product for the next couple of weeks.

Managers- watch your anti-freeze stock

With the recent BLIND SIDE on the WWAF price increase --it reminds us to have our managers monitor your stock requirements on order skid qty's as required. For example I just mentioned to Ryan that he should get one more skid of rad a/f ... especially since there is NO guarantee the price will stay after Oct 13th ( or whenever the special stops again). Keep an eye on your stock ....

CQ University temporily off the air

Some of you had access to CARQUEST university for training courses ... this has been shut down and a new program is being rolled out. Details should follow in a month ( or two ?). JV stores have access to the new program - so if you are by a JV store - like Windsor -- go havea look ...eventually us independents will get it.

Thanksgiving Holiday

Please remember when you open your stores on Tuesday, October 10th to change your EOD status. If you don't remember EOD will not run that night.

Everyone have a good holiday.

Right to Repair - article of interest

Please see the summer-fall issue of 'The Voice' - an AIA publication that arrived recently ( if your store didn't get a copy - call Greg H to see why - we now have all stores registered as members for AIA )

On page 4 there is a good article on the battle for the RIGHT TO REPAIR ... we have asked AIA for a pdf copy of this so we can forward to our customers - in the mean time --check out the paper copy

Brian Taylor ---goes to the DARK SIDE --

An update - we have to correct ...the recent appointments ... we had Brian Taylor as General Manager Ontario - which covered JV and associate stores ... we stand corrected ... Brian has gone to the DARK SIDE ...he is GM for JV's only ...we wish him the best and with any good luck he can return from the DARK SIDE to enjoy the spirit of the independent jobber side soon ...:-)

Hi Speed Debit

BIG NEWS FLASH

D&T has gone hi speed with their debit machines. Our machines are now Beer Store fast.

A&I products - set line code

We have set an X line code for A&I Products so we can go ahead and learn this line. We are lobbying for Toronto to support A&I like they do with Keystone --but until then we will continue to learn on our pace. Ken at D&T is the best trained so far -if you have questions - ask Ken. Line code to use is XAI

Jot these numbers down
800-268-5087 is a order line # -- you can also get transfered back from Iowa to Woodstock to talk with Russ Philips Ext #2052 or Lionel #2051. Our rep is Dennis McCutchen - mobile # 519-536-1993

The managers have our margin logic as a test - see them. The web site is pretty good. The biggest problem -is that the product opens up a whole new section that we haven't done much with - it will take time to be good at a line like this - and it takes effort. Dennis will be down early next week and will be seeing all the stores -- watch for more details.

Note --they quote prices in US dollars - to which we need to add on the fixed monthly currency surcharge -for Oct is is 1.13 and in Sept is was 1.12 ( 12% more ) - which seems pretty fair way to do it.

Petes updates BRG 2nd line hub bearings - again

Petes Paint has added movement code 1 thru 3 in MevoTech hub bearings ... if you think your store should also have the choice of two brands -- have your store manager call Greg H and it can be done.

How safe is our Oil Dri ??

We had a call form another source claiming to have 'silica free' oil dri as well as their 'normal' oil dri ... this made us ask the question to Peter McNally .... do we need a silica free oil dri

Well -it turns out that we indeed have the safer product ... anything with less than a content 0.1% of crystalline silica and more is NOT subject to the whmis act ... anything that os over this --IS subject to the whmis act

Here are some data from Oil Dri Canada -- your salesman and managers will have the original .doc version is someone wants a paper copy.

===================================
What is crystalline silica?
>>>>>Crystalline silica is one of the most common mineral on earth. The form mostly seen is quartz (beach sand).

What is the regulation concerning the crystalline silica?
>>>>>In Canada, the regulation says that a content 0.1% of crystalline silica and more is subject to the whmis act.

Crystalline silica in Oil Dri floor absorbents?
>>>>>>Even if crystalline silica is a component of the clay, the content of respirable dust is under 0.1% of the total weight. In normal conditions, the naturally-occurring crystalline silica as quartz is in fact below 0.1mg/m3. It is in fact safe to use.

Why a warning on the bag?
>>>>>It is a reminder that it is possible to generate dust in the air while using this product, just like it is possible to be in contact with a solvent while pouring it. In both cases, the answer is to act carefully.
======================================
More information on the silica content of our floor absorbents.

Oil Dri Industrial Floor Absorbent is made of 100% ground clay from Mississippi. It is a natural product. (No additives) An important fact is that clay (floor absorbent) may generate dust. The physical content of respirable dust in the product is under 0.1 % of the total weight.

It is clear that under conditions of normal use, exposure to respirable crystalline silica from this product is below the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit and the ACGIH Threshold Limit Value.

It is a fact that silica is causing eye and respiratory irritations, like sand at the beach (sand is silica). An adequate ventilation in plant or the use of approved protection will reduce the exposure.

***** We are screening our product at different steps in the process. That technique is reducing the dust content for a safer product. ****** ( starts by GH )

The use of that product will generate less contact with dust then the use of a product like Eagle Pitcher. It is a fact that the hardness of the granule will prevent slaking and at the same time,it will reduce the level of dust generated by attrition. The Eagle Pitcher is generating more dust since it has a lower resistance. (hardness)

List of end-users:

Alcan Canada Hydro-Québec
General Motors Canadair
Bombardier(Valcourt) Monsanto
National Defense ABB
Quebecor Ottawa-Carleton Transit Commission
This is a short list of Oil Dri floor absorbent users.

Just another example of how our product is the higher end product -and that others can always have something cheaper and more dangerous ( less screening to remove dust )

Good selling

chassis training = free food

Could not resist --to see if I can publish this BEFORE Ryan. Ryan forwarded an e-mail ( not a BLOG entry ?? ) on www.carquestchassistraining.com

here is part of what you can see --this is also a site for our customers

So - Ryan -- where was the BLOG info. (big smile)

ASE counterman testing - see Jobber News

in Sept issue of Jobber News - page 42 - they have a summary of the type of questions asked on the ASE counterman training exam ... check it out. Good luck t these writing it for the first time or updating their certificate ( to the old ones ). This year the exam is at St Clair college. Some of the older staff have never quite forgiven Greg H for booking in Detroit years ago before ASE came to Canada - it wasn't in the nicest part of town as it turns out.

new positions at CQ in Toronto

Here are the changes - Brian Taylor steps up to fill the vacant position left by Steve Gushie after he became President ... Brian is General Manager - Ontario and all JV and associate issues stop at his desk.

So that creates a vacant position for 'Sales Manager - Independent Sales' - that is taken by Doug McIntosh

So that in turn creates a vacant position for Finance Director - that is taken by Eric Boutin. Most of you have not meet Eric, yet -- but with our year end soon we will be one of this first reviews one might think - for late in Nov.

Congatulations to all

using an internet e-cat --- need to log out when done ?

Received a note from DNS ( starters and alternators ) reminding us that we need to LOG OUT when done with their internet e-cat. Hold on - that can be a problem ... I for one rarely have developed a habit of doing this other that on important sites --like internet banking.

But - if you can remember -- try to log-out when you are done. I have to assume that closing the window is the same as logging out. We have e-mailed question to DNS.

follow up on Pelee Island Customer BBQ

Ken ( salesman of account) and the following staff members - Ryan, Matt, A.J., Rhonda and Greg + spouses attended the invitation of Tom & mary on Pelee Island to see their location and to thank all staff for the excellent customer service they have received this summer. Perfect weather teated us to the bat ride over and back and the BBQ and quick island tour was enjoyed by all. Photo is part of their shop - seen en route around the island.
