In a nutshell a regular solid pulley just drives the alternator. The one way clutch will disengage the alternator and let it overrun but does not absorb engine vibration. The OAD will not only disengage the alternator it will also absorb the torsional vibration (engine vibration) prolonging the life of the entire ABDS (Automotive Belt Drive System).
