Pricing - Profits and 'fair value'
Abe asked a good question yesterday - that started me thinking of the issue of pricing in a ‘bigger picture’. Abe’s question had to deal with what can one do to ‘match’ a price.
Lets look at this from several sides:
a)-if this is a one of a kind or limited impact - any person who thinks of themselves as a senior staff member can do what they feel is in the best interest of the store. You are on profit sharing and know the impact of doing or not doing the action. Do we lose a customer? Is it a fair price comparison, or something that is an un-fair comparison. Can the price be confirmed? We do ask that you clearly mark the invoice as “PRICE CHAGE TO MATCH COMPETITION” …. So if this invoice ends up in one of our INSTALLER customers – they will understand why their customer got this price.
b)-a harder question –this price quote might be for a line that ‘is changing’ and we need to also change with the times. It might mean we have to source from another supplier or another line from that supplier. In these cases it is IMPORTANT that you send the feedback to your manager and he discuss with other managers and myself of a future plan. We also want to make sure this feedback extends up the chain to our supplier to see if they have an option. Clearly – the impact of CHINA has had a huge effect on the value of products ( to name just one example). These decisions may take some time –so REPEAT any info your encounter again ( and again). Never give up!
We need to show the customer that we give him good value. Some customers could be reminded of the full service, fast special orders, good warranty coverage …etc etc … but some customers are just driven by price. How do you make your decisions on what YOU buy? Got that great deal on a TV only to find out the store sucks on service or warranty? In some cases we can’t match the price – and the selling company often pays the price by going out of business. Find an old phone book and look in the yellow pages – there are many examples of companies that just faded away – a company has to make profits in order to survive and continue. A company that ‘low-balls’ and is out of business after 2 or 3 years –doesn’t do anyone any service.
Start-up companies or companies under-going a new owner may provide ‘temporary’ low prices and in 6-12 months jack the prices up …usually in order to survive. There are many examples of this practice. Unfortunately the other competition must endue this stupidity until the start-up gets their first financial statement and reality sets in. In some cases they run out of money ( cash flow crisis ) prior – but for others …it just takes time … to realize they don’t have a sustainable business model.
Treat the customer like you want to be treated. And remember -- their comments are important to us all …. This is how we learn where the market is going. Please IMPROVE your communication skills on how you pass on the market pricing info to your manager and encourage him to make a point to see that he discusses these points with the ‘manager team’
Together – we can make a difference and get our customers the best value they deserve. If anyone needs another cope of the business book we encourage you to read ( Up Against the Wal-Marts -- see Greg to get your copy --well worth the effort to learn and become smarter)

new Distributors arejust a bit away
a new line of NEW distributors is coming soon. The line code is NDS. If you go to e-cat and look under "Coils & Modules" you will see the e-cat listing -- stock has NOT been set nor arrived at Toronto but is expected early in the new year. This line was mentioned in Sept ( or thereabout ) Driving Force CD. You can go to the F-9 screen in POS and type in NDs and put an asterisk ( * ) for the part number and see some of the numbers in the system awaiting the stock levels being set and stock received. Managers have been asked to add this line to their April count list.
Castrol's on sale til Dec 15th ...
There is a sale price on most sku's in CASTROL -- Including the non-detergent oils ...see the CARQUEST-LINK under 'my promotions' for more details.
Filter Interchamge seems ot be back - wonder where it went?
The filter interchange is back -- not quite sure who broke it ( someone at CARQUEST did it --wasn't anything locally ) ... be sure to try it out and get back to selling more filters ...use F-7 for interchange and punch in your number -- good selling
Mystery Shopper
There is a mystery shopper calling the stores. She is asking what is the best brand of oil to buy for her older car. Abe from Petes got it right and has won a $70.00 watch that he will recieve in a week or two. Quess the oil brand and respond. Ask Abe if you don't know.

PRICE Reduction on trouble light - just ask ...
We asked ( err ...bitched ?? ) about the apparent poor value fr CPS 81765 flour type trouble light. So -- Peter McNally DROPPED the price ... we use to sell for $9.95 and we now sell for $6.95 ( we have price breaks for 2 and 6 as well). Peter is looking at how to source an even better source --so if you ever see something from a line that might work - let me or Peter know.
If there is something that we need to improve --we have at ASK. What do you want to fix, today?
EOM
EOM is on Thursday November 30th. Please make sure that you run off POS on Wednesday the 29th and then again on the 30th. Resume the normal schedule after that. a while back we posted sku's we felt we should have available in BSP for brake shoes --here is same list for missing sku's in pads ...Replex makes all these -- we need CARQUEST to list these in the econo line. We don;t want you to sell them --we want you to up sell to the better quality grades -- but in that emergency or for that 'gottahavecheapstuff' customer or when it it for a mother-in-law type vehicle ...

More missing pads - this time in FRI
We have heard that CARQUEST Toronto will update ALL BSP pad & shoe applications to pick up missing applications in e-cat =-- as we have shown in yesterdays post.
We ALSO have a few missed RAYBESTOS FRI applications ... most of the missed applications will be corrected when we get the OCT DVD update ...look ...don't ask me how we missed getting this update .... two other local CQ stores have it ( I called ) ...so lets really make sure when we see the DVD come into store # 1 -- it gets updated !! Especially for when Greg H is away.
Anyways --the missing data - example --2003 Escalade front pad BCD785 is missed ( ceramic ) --this has been check in both the up to date e-cat ( used Web-link to see the latest ) and verified it is also missed in the USA e-cat using my special test Exploris access to the data base. So I know it is RIGHT.
So -- if you don't see all the flavors in pads --check -- you might have it on stock ....like this one --all THREE stores stock the BCD785!!
Want another example -
2003 Windstar BCD803 front pads do NOT list --- would Auto Barn catch this - since they stopped keeping BCD 803 in favour of BCD803's ...'ouch' if the staff don't ...
or this is missed - BCD 816 for front ads on 2003 Ford Focus ( see a pattern on MISSED Ceramic pads ?? )
or this is missed - 2000 Audi A6 rear pads BMD340A & GSD340A
============= late flash =========== solution to problem ?? =============

A little more info relating to BCD pads not showing in Exploris and Weblink.
NOTE that the problem mentioned below did not affect J-CON or any other
UNIX-based system.
I just spoke with our Weblink folks, who explained that there was an issue
with the CARQUEST version of the October PartExpert DVD. So for the
Exploris and Weblink catalog servers, we had to reload the "non-CARQUEST"
DVD, which did not have the BCD update.
The November CARQUEST PartExpert DVD will be loaded to Exploris and to
Weblink
over the Thanksgiving weekend. This should put all systems in synch.
Thanks to everyone for your input on this particular issue.
Brian
====================================================
Note to all-- we have Nov CD for e-cat and will install tonight ( Tue ) -- please help me check these issues and see how many are solved with the new Nov data ... appreciate your help

the last few pages on our end of day -- clues ?
some times the last few pages on the end of day - normally sent to Greg H -- have some clues of problems --for example last weekend we found we didn't have the 'right combination' --- What does that mean -- well -- when head office adds a new line or sub-line -- it is important to know that the s/l ( sub-line) and billing schedules have been properly added to our computer.
Two problems -- s/l 10 in LTG - lights over $150 and a apparently new s/l in CPB #12 for weather stripping ... Both have now been corrected. Now - lets find out what's in these line codes ... ad how to sell them . An e-mail has been sent to Bart asking for more in on the weather stripping parts. The LTG is understood - if questions - see Greg H

not ALL pads are shown in E-cat -- a reminder ONE MORE TIME
We have mentioned this before - but we have to keep reminding you - ( that is - or until CQ starts listings all pads - but they are stubborn on this issue - for whatever reason ...)
Case in point -- Auto Barn has set the levels back on BMD459 and set the levels up on BCD 459 ...and they sell quite a few of the BMD459's .... BUT .... (isn't there always a BUT ) ... the ceramic pads are NOT listed in the e-cat !!!!!! That can cause a BIG PROBLEM with junior staff or customers trying to order from WEB-LINK
Look for more examples and list them in the comments section below this article.
Example 2002 Chev G2500 show properly ( thanks to Brian Wiggs info ) BMD459
but -- mine was 1999 Chev C3500 ( w/ rear drum brakes ) --didn't --
another BAD example is BCD 652 for 97 Ford Explorer ---the BCD part doesn't show in e-cat !!
and it made worse by Auto Barn dropping the BMD652 in favour of the BCD652
another is NO listing for MDL 559 for 96 Crown Vic front pads ( but you stock or will soon stock )
another MISSED is 98 Nissan Sentra front pads MDL 668
another missed is 2000 Expedition front pads MDL 702 and REAR pads MDL 711
another missed is 1996 Crown Vic rear pads MDL 674
another missed is 2000 Olds Bravada rear pads BSP D729
another missed is 2003 Ford Windstar front pads MDL803
another missed is 2004 PT Cruiser front pads MDL824

additional sku's aded in BSP for shoes
Have added extra stock in BSP for brake shoes -=- PLEASE !! watch for applications where they DO NOT show in e-cat.
We can two things ... .
1) we can link to something that does show -- like the FRI RS red shoe by putting this in the FRI RSxyz description '@BSP SLSxyz' You do NOT use the 'quote' mark -- but you must use the @ then the three digit line - then a SPACE and then the part number ...any thing other than this --won't work and will probably mean your POS (point of sale) screen will be in a error loop ( thus the saying 'close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades')
... 2) please tell Greg H and he will lobby for better e-cat data from Replex ( the makers of BSP shoes
We will be requesting these additional sku's as SLS in BSP -- and will force them on a special order if needed !!
RS263 RS446 RS473 RS519 RS538 RS559 RS569 RS581 RS582 RS593 RS636 RS657
RS659 RS675 RS696 RS720 RS723 RS745 BS760 BS781 BS784 BS791 BS795 RS357R BS538R RS583R RS704R RS705R
For other jobbers who read this --remember that FRI RS716 = BSP SLS 698
and FRO RS 703 = BSP SLS 714 --- both in stock and BOTH missed in e-cat - thus requiring the LINKAGE thru the description.
next week we will start the same process on adding - requesting OBVIOUS MISSED sku's in pads for BSP

otc 4504 and 4503
stumbled upon otc stinger numbers 4504 (metric bubble flaring tool) and 4503 (standard flaring tool) approximately 4 months ago, put them into stock and sales have been great. (4504 sold 11, 4503 sold 5) pricing is very reasonable at $34.43 otc for either kit. warehouse now stocks both, along with a nice lever bender 6515. maybe think about stocking and showing your customers.

It is pretty bad when you screw up something as simple as a light bulb ...:-(

he CARS --they Keep a changin ....
General Motors Corp. may begin development work soon on a new rechargeable battery-electric motor hybrid car that would use an onboard internal-combustion engine as a generator to produce electricity to extend the range of the vehicle's power cells, GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said in an interview with auto industry trade publication Automotive News this week.
The car may be unveiled as a prototype next year and will not be an emissions-free vehicle, unlike GM's defunct EV1.
The prototype will run initially on power provided by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and will switch to electricity provided by the onboard gasoline motor or diesel-fueled generator when the battery charge runs out, according to a knowledgeable person within the company. The car would need to recharge twice per day and probably would have a battery range of 20 to 30 miles before needing to switch to electricity generated by the motor.

When is a circuit board --not a circuit board
The image is for MTM 70010 --we have added this to all stores --use it as a salesman 'whats new'. This is a known problem in Van's - see D&T ( Chris or Ryan ) for more details. These are hard to find in e-cat -- remember to use your PAPER cat ... we are trying to make the e-cat better - but that takes time. Dorman has In MTM ( not DOR ) and calls them a circuit board ... hmmm .... looks like a wire harness to me -- but then .. here are the other sku's in this list

winter shelftalkers available
Most popular winter chemical shelf talkers are available. Of interest is the REC 35-356CQ that has been changed to ANT 35-356CQ -- please see you have updated your stock. The part number update has been done - but you should verify stock. The shelf talkers are in your stores mail slot -- good selling ....
Gates Mystery Shopper
Just a reminder that Gates has a mystery shopper calling until December 15th, 2006. D&T just received a call and passed the test. The lucky person that answers the phone and suggests a tentioner gets $25 bucks. This time it was me!
can you find the error ....
Every once in a while--there is an error. And we REALLY need you guys to THINK when you are billing something out.
For example Auto Barn billed out a PSC 20-50830V1 pump-- BUT -- it didn't have the Core ... attached to the part. SO -- there was NO CORE billed. We found this out when the customer called back and said - hey - is there a core on this or not .... and it was over $100!!
Here is what the story is. in J-Con the CORE is a separate UNIT. On our older systems the core was part of the part number. So - in J-Con you can have times where the PART NUMBER is NOT linked to the CORE NUMBER ... and that is bad.
We run a 2-20 inventory dump once a month and then at month end we will run programs that check for missing links ... but some times you sell things before we can re-link. PLEASE help us all- and help your profit sharing as well -- look for problems ... and let us know on anything you have a question on.
Want to see a part that didn't have a core linked -- see your store manager and look at his 2-20 for Oct -- look for the part in PSC ( see the part with a BLANK in the core field ... 20-54500 -- this has since been corrected.

what do yoiu know of www.carquestdirecthit,com ??
Have you looked at CARQUEST Direct Hit
It is a web based vehicle repair system that shops are starting to really like. For example Mercers from Wheatley On has recently mentioned that this web site has solved problems that another CD based solution didn't/couldn't. When time is money and the right fix found faster is extra profit for your shop - this is worthwhile looking at.
As Lary Goudge at the next training session what he thinks of it - he has a access and uses it.

November 13th
Please remember that all banks and government facilities will be closed Monday November 13th in observance of Remembrance Day.
Battery prices tied to LEAD prices
At a recent staff meeting we passed around the chart for COPPER -- well -- look at this chart for LEAD. We will probably see LEAD stay high until they stop needing so many BULLETS in the middle east.
New battery signs have been made for Auto Barn and D&T ( Petes declines --so how does the staff KNOW what batter has the FREE road side assistance ...hint --on the word.doc signs these batteries are in GREY background ...and how does the staff know the difference on CA and CCA ratings for batteries ,...as some customers get the misleading CA number from other sellers of batteries) ??

Just what happened this last end of month in J-Con
Here is what I think happened -- ran end of month - last month - problem with customer history rolling for Auto Barn ( source Rhonda)
This End of Month - all 3 stores didn't run the customer history --and the parts ledger data ( parts history ) did roll either. So we ran the end of month DURING the business hours ... and that lead to REALLY SLOW POS actions --to the point that many thought their terminals or printers were frozen --- not so --they just only had a fraction of the CPU ( computer ) power and they had to wait
If we have another month like this --we could run the end of month early and run some checks to make sure all is well-- and if we have a problem --we can call the help desk which is open until 10:00 pm.
