One more time -- ERROR in e-cat -- options --- PLEASE READ

Greg Guyitt spotted this error in e-cat - this happened in the Dec issue of the Cdn e-cat --and errors like this can take several months to go thru the process to get corrected. We have to post a note on the CARQUEST-LINK( or e-mail them directly (see GH for details)) - then they have to verify what we say is true - then they have to contact the e-cat manager for the line and - then that person changes the data and submits correct to Activant - then Activant has to do the change - then Activant has to release a new monthly CD/DVD - then we have update our e-cat data ...a lot of steps .... in the upcoming system this will be vastly improved ...but that is not now --how do we handle NOW!!!!!

To Greg Guyitts credit -- he has done the EXTRA work and has explained his system. We have THREE images - click on any to EXPAND so you can see the detail ( see - if you have Firefox you could use a new tab - call GH to explain ...just a dig at the old ones who use IE 6.0 )

What Greg does --- 1) change the description of the part. When you do this - it changes it for all stores - only need to do it one ...notice the THIRD IMAGE - I call it MODIFIED Web Link ... you will see on Web-Link the customer will see the updated description ...in this case "---REAR ROTOR !!!" ...we are trying HARD to make someone ask -- ...but I asked for a FRONT ROTOR ...why would this say rear rotor... You can also see in WEB-LINK that the cross drilled rotor is the CORRECT part number ...take a minute and see this fact ...in web-link it shows easier because we have less fluffy extra lines of description.
What Greg does ---- 2) add the part message option in a 3-18 screen. NOTE --this has to be done for EACH STORE ...this part message will replace the description in J-Con e-cat. See what GG added --each store will be slightly different --but you catch the drift of this idea ---he says "THIS IS A REAR ROTOR CAT ERROR AS OF JAN07" ..... AND once the correction is made we can go in and replace/delete this message. We have a virgin and modified web-link example ---can you spot which one is which ????

Why is this such a BIG THING!!! One -- the REAR rotor is approx 50% more expensive than the front rotor ...so the customer thinks we are WAY CHEAP or worse --WAY TOO EXPENSIVE and we lose the sale.

We want you to understand the options we have in trying to help produce a temporary 'band-aid' while we wait ( and wait and wait ) for the correction ....

Hint --look at other parts -like the cross drilled -- ask your self --hmm ..I wonder why they have a different BASE number ... ( exclude the prefix ) .... see if we all can be more observant ...a good new years resolution.

Final point --we have asked that Raleigh stop BLOCKING the images we post ... if you are looking at this post and don't see any images -it is because WEB-SENSE is blocking them --turn off your VPN ( or if you are at a store or DC with VPN is set at the router -- go to your home computer ) --we will ask AGAIN to have web-sense adjusted to stop blocking this url ...http://photos1.blogger.com

Keep this idea's coming -- happy new year

E Cat error

On 1999-2002 chev silverado pick up the front and rear rotors are mixed up.Front s/b 55054 but reads 55084 and rear s/b 55084 but reads 55054.There is big price difference so we either get outclassed or we give away the farm.I have asked for this to be fixed ASAP.Our weblink customers have the same issue. It is correct on GMC sierra but that only helps us(if we remember) not a Weblink guy.

Walker Cat Converters - waranty issues ...

here is what Dean from Walker says on cat converter warranty claims ....
Dead writes to Ryan ...."Our policy on converters is that we need to see the units and we require a copy of the failed Drive Clean emission test as backup. Obviously if the units that you sent to the Carquest DC are no longer available then we will have to make an exception and Dawn will look after you. The majority of the time it is not the fault of the converter but an improperly tuned engine that causes the converter to fail - either dumping raw fuel or engine coolant through the exhaust causes the substrate in the converter to overheat and melt down - often this overheating shows up in the form of pink , blue and purple colours on the external body or heat sheild of the converter. That's why our people need to see the actual units."

Seems to me - that we need to get out customers out to CTI -then they would understand the next CTI class -- Fuel Trim ... hmm ...options ?

Dawn is our new rep for Walker - expect her in Jan

Carquest Driver saves Christmas!!

FROM: Const. Janet Hayes RELEASE: Thursday, December 21, 2006 10:30am

Overnight Release

Kingsville:

Kingsville Officer on routine patrol initiated a vehicle stop on Jasperson Road at 2:50am. As a result the 20-year-old male driver from Kingsville was issued a 12-hour-suspension.

THE GRINCH HITS KINGSVILLE - HERO SAVES A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS TREE! - IS NOTHING SACRED ANYMORE?

On December 21st at 3:10am, an employee for Car Quest, 60-year-old Greg BAKER from Pickering, observed the Christmas Tree on the corner of Main Street and Division Street on fire. Mr. BAKER immediately exited his vehicle, and was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher from his vehicle, before any major damage was incurred. As police arrived on scene, it was observed that the suspect(s) had emptied a decorative planter of it's greenery, placed it at the base of the tree, along with a wooden pallet and set it ablaze. Kingsville Fire Department attended on scene and ensured that the fire would not start up again. The Fire Chief advised that Mr. BAKER had saved the tree. If it had not been for the efforts of Mr. BAKER the fire would have totally engulfed the tree and it would have been destroyed, Christmas Lights and all! This tree is a focal point for the Town and had recently been decorated to celebrate the festive season. There appears to be minimal damage to the tree, however, the lights and some bows were destroyed. Extensive Patrols of the Town were made in an attempt to locate and bring to justice these suspects, unfortunately, with negative results.

Anyone with information of the arsonist(s) is asked to contact Cst. Wilson at Kingsville Detachment or Crime Stoppers!!! ative results.

****NOTE: GREG BAKER HAS GRANTED PERMISSION TO USE HIS NAME IN THE MEDIA RELEASE!!

K&N Filter --getting better - but ...

K&N Filter is getting better -- but in a month or so --should be even better ... until then-- do NOT trust the e-cat in J-Con. Please use the e-Keystone e-cat ( using the CARQUEST log-in ) or the paper catalog. In a month or so - we should have more numbers that show in e-cat ...and I think we will see a separate LINE CODE for K&N --right now we use KST. Stay tuned...

Temporary E-Cat problems

We updated the Activant e-cat yesterday evening

here are known problems : - will add more as you tell me

1) the SHK line of strut mounts is NOT showing - will try to get this back asap. I do see the RCH line of strut mounts shows for my test ( RCH Mevotech is notoriously bad at e-cat )

feedback on any other change you see?
I see that Greg G beat Ryan to the punch in showing the K&N filters - we added the image - you can click on any image to see the larger size if that helps

Keystone

We now have K and N filters catalogued and priced.Check it out and look for problems. We are in the process of asking for more numbers in the warehouse. Also see your manager for a list of KST line codes. You will need it to bill out anything you order from KST.Jan 1 XBO or new numbers will no longer be acceptable.

easier way to look for parts on OBSOLETE RETURN ....doh!

Colour us partially stupid --it took us this long to figure this out .... hmm ...how many other things are we doing the DUMB way .... ???

Got a list of obsolete parts ...say 150 numbers in Walker ... the dumb way is to enter each part in a 3-18 ir 2-2 screen and see if we have it -- right ... or ignore and hope we did have any ( the lazy way )

WELL -- here is the SMART WAY -- try it out on te next obsolete list we receive.
Steps
1- wait for a list -- say WALKER as =mentioned above
2-run a 2-20 report and use a SAVED format -- # 9
3- for heavens sake -- DO NOT DELETE this or any other saved format ..it is easy to do if you are NOT watching what you answer to
4-just run for the line in question --or if you must run for al lines -- NEVER ...I repeat ...NEVER run to a printer ...what a tree killer , -- if you want all lines -- call Greg H and you can see how to save to a capture file on our emulator

Neat - or what --if you have anything --it will show --if it shows nothing --then you are free & clear ...we have used the following logic ( in case someone from another store is reading this --this is what we dod with Mikes HELP)
set to display mfg code ( hmm --don;t see this on report - might have to tweek it
set description to print
set to print ONLY if movement code is EQUAL to zero
set to print ONLY if on hand is GREATER THAN zero
set to show cost

enjoy --like i said at the start --one dumb problem solved --how many more dumb problems do we need to find and fix ...

brake lines - new sku's stocked

We have added some new stock in BL Brake Lines

DT Auto -- 5300 US Bubble + PA-300 plated series
Petes - above two and missing 6300 import added as well
A Barn - US Bubble only - others in stock

stores have been asked to get a holder and set up - limited stock for all

Remember the line of special adaptor lines --as image shown --see page #127 & 128 in current cat for more idea's of what you can sell.

Keystone update

Here is some more info

Auto Barn - at Joe's request - I called and asked that they contact Exeter PA warehouse and change their address to the correct address. FYI --when you log into the CQ account it says welcome 1045 and when you log in with the direct account it says welcome Greg-Joe. Only the CQ account has e-cat -- try it out !!

D&T -- when you log in with CQ account - says welcome 1010 -- on direct account is says welcome CHRIS. ps - 1010 is your floor shipping # at CQ

Petes - we have REQUESTED the CQ account to say 1020 - right now it says MIKE ...the direct account says welcome PETE.

PLEASE try the e-cat in the CQ account -- comments .......

**** UPDATE *****
Matt says the TWO accounts if you bring up in IE 7.0 using tabs -- on a search on one tab the other tab will change to the first account --making it difficult to do a quick comparison - he suggests that until ( or if they ever ? ) fix it --open two separate pages. He also goes on ( and on and on and on ) about how Firefox doesn't; handle this site well -- eKeystone need to fix this as well ... it is not that I was kidding Matt on why he should use Firefox ... eh?

extra effort to link value items in Worldpac

I have asked Matt at D&T, Abe at Petes and Jason at Auto Barn if they would spearhead an extra effort to LINK value items to the existing CARQUEST part ...see the example for 95-06 BMW oil filter ... once you find an item that fits the CRITERIA of being a VALUE ITEM ...we want to link like he have done here -- and SET a re-order level when the sales warrant. We will be ordering weekly for the stocked items. We have set the vendor code to the Misc XXX code for your store ( D&T is 4. Petes is 8 and Auto Barn is 5 ) -- so you can create a suggested order in WPC in that vendor #. Comments?

What is FET on oil filters ??

Joe spotted an interesting problem ...he was selling a sku in CFI and it would add .50 to the INVOICE and was labeled as F.E.T. Well - we have found out more ...are you interested and curious?

You can CREATE this problem -- by doing this
step 1 -- find a part number that we don't have in our system. Grab a CFI price list and look for something odd. You can
VERIFY we don't have it in our system by punching in the part # into a 2.2 screen for instance.
step 2 -- once you have a VERIFIED non-stock number -- go to invoice and sell it ( it gets pulled from our Parts SourceCD )
to some understanding account ( that is wondering why you are doing this ) ... look at the invoice ...see
the .50 in FET
step 3 -- go to 3.18 and look at field #18 Excise Tax ..see that the value is .50 for the part number you have picked.
step 4 -- SOLUTION -- *** UPDATED *** 12-6-06 *** we need to run a 3-3 and clear back all Excise Tax values - see your manager - or you can run a 3-18 and change the specific KNOWN problem sku and re-invoice ---we had originally posted that there is an automatic daily update for this--there is NOT!!

More info -- if you need to invoice right away -- go into 3.18 and correct the excise tax and re-bill

This is a work around for having multiple provinces with various excise tax of waste oil filters -in a new system we will avoid this. Thanks to Joe for spotting this problem.

We have asked why this sort of repetitive problem isn't posted somewhere on the link.

how to make things happen -- just ASK

Pete asked for more stock in ECC. When we looked -- we wondered at what Windsor was doing --when we ASKED -- we found they had to level 6 -- we ASKED them to increase to level 7 ...they have just confirmred that they have an additional 35 skus and are full 7 in ECC.

ps - Petes also got what they asked for --more in their stock ... so think about what you need --and ...then ask. At worst you have made your point visible and the next time you ask - you are one step closed ...at best -- you get it right away.

Pricing - Profits and 'fair value'

Abe asked a good question yesterday - that started me thinking of the issue of pricing in a ‘bigger picture’. Abe’s question had to deal with what can one do to ‘match’ a price.
Lets look at this from several sides:
a)-if this is a one of a kind or limited impact - any person who thinks of themselves as a senior staff member can do what they feel is in the best interest of the store. You are on profit sharing and know the impact of doing or not doing the action. Do we lose a customer? Is it a fair price comparison, or something that is an un-fair comparison. Can the price be confirmed? We do ask that you clearly mark the invoice as “PRICE CHAGE TO MATCH COMPETITION” …. So if this invoice ends up in one of our INSTALLER customers – they will understand why their customer got this price.
b)-a harder question –this price quote might be for a line that ‘is changing’ and we need to also change with the times. It might mean we have to source from another supplier or another line from that supplier. In these cases it is IMPORTANT that you send the feedback to your manager and he discuss with other managers and myself of a future plan. We also want to make sure this feedback extends up the chain to our supplier to see if they have an option. Clearly – the impact of CHINA has had a huge effect on the value of products ( to name just one example). These decisions may take some time –so REPEAT any info your encounter again ( and again). Never give up!

We need to show the customer that we give him good value. Some customers could be reminded of the full service, fast special orders, good warranty coverage …etc etc … but some customers are just driven by price. How do you make your decisions on what YOU buy? Got that great deal on a TV only to find out the store sucks on service or warranty? In some cases we can’t match the price – and the selling company often pays the price by going out of business. Find an old phone book and look in the yellow pages – there are many examples of companies that just faded away – a company has to make profits in order to survive and continue. A company that ‘low-balls’ and is out of business after 2 or 3 years –doesn’t do anyone any service.

Start-up companies or companies under-going a new owner may provide ‘temporary’ low prices and in 6-12 months jack the prices up …usually in order to survive. There are many examples of this practice. Unfortunately the other competition must endue this stupidity until the start-up gets their first financial statement and reality sets in. In some cases they run out of money ( cash flow crisis ) prior – but for others …it just takes time … to realize they don’t have a sustainable business model.

Treat the customer like you want to be treated. And remember -- their comments are important to us all …. This is how we learn where the market is going. Please IMPROVE your communication skills on how you pass on the market pricing info to your manager and encourage him to make a point to see that he discusses these points with the ‘manager team’

Together – we can make a difference and get our customers the best value they deserve. If anyone needs another cope of the business book we encourage you to read ( Up Against the Wal-Marts -- see Greg to get your copy --well worth the effort to learn and become smarter)
Greg H 11-06

new Distributors arejust a bit away

a new line of NEW distributors is coming soon. The line code is NDS. If you go to e-cat and look under "Coils & Modules" you will see the e-cat listing -- stock has NOT been set nor arrived at Toronto but is expected early in the new year. This line was mentioned in Sept ( or thereabout ) Driving Force CD. You can go to the F-9 screen in POS and type in NDs and put an asterisk ( * ) for the part number and see some of the numbers in the system awaiting the stock levels being set and stock received. Managers have been asked to add this line to their April count list.

Castrol's on sale til Dec 15th ...

There is a sale price on most sku's in CASTROL -- Including the non-detergent oils ...see the CARQUEST-LINK under 'my promotions' for more details.

Filter Interchamge seems ot be back - wonder where it went?

The filter interchange is back -- not quite sure who broke it ( someone at CARQUEST did it --wasn't anything locally ) ... be sure to try it out and get back to selling more filters ...use F-7 for interchange and punch in your number -- good selling

Mystery Shopper

There is a mystery shopper calling the stores. She is asking what is the best brand of oil to buy for her older car. Abe from Petes got it right and has won a $70.00 watch that he will recieve in a week or two. Quess the oil brand and respond. Ask Abe if you don't know.

PRICE Reduction on trouble light - just ask ...

We asked ( err ...bitched ?? ) about the apparent poor value fr CPS 81765 flour type trouble light. So -- Peter McNally DROPPED the price ... we use to sell for $9.95 and we now sell for $6.95 ( we have price breaks for 2 and 6 as well). Peter is looking at how to source an even better source --so if you ever see something from a line that might work - let me or Peter know.

If there is something that we need to improve --we have at ASK. What do you want to fix, today?

EOM

EOM is on Thursday November 30th. Please make sure that you run off POS on Wednesday the 29th and then again on the 30th. Resume the normal schedule after that. The Carquest gift ideas flyer will be sent out with the statements on December 1st. If you have any statements that you want to hand deliver please let Deb and I know before the end of the month.

missing sku's in BSP for pads

a while back we posted sku's we felt we should have available in BSP for brake shoes --here is same list for missing sku's in pads ...Replex makes all these -- we need CARQUEST to list these in the econo line. We don;t want you to sell them --we want you to up sell to the better quality grades -- but in that emergency or for that 'gottahavecheapstuff' customer or when it it for a mother-in-law type vehicle ...

These are all D's missing in BSP
600 641 658 698 726 730

All are MDL #'s missing in BSP
593 698 (rush !!!) 726 727 (rush!!) 729 777 782 802 819 824 844 857 ( rush!! - you have rears! 858 ) 881 882 883 898 908 962 988 1012 1021 1083 730A 768A & 833A

More missing pads - this time in FRI

We have heard that CARQUEST Toronto will update ALL BSP pad & shoe applications to pick up missing applications in e-cat =-- as we have shown in yesterdays post.

We ALSO have a few missed RAYBESTOS FRI applications ... most of the missed applications will be corrected when we get the OCT DVD update ...look ...don't ask me how we missed getting this update .... two other local CQ stores have it ( I called ) ...so lets really make sure when we see the DVD come into store # 1 -- it gets updated !! Especially for when Greg H is away.

Anyways --the missing data - example --2003 Escalade front pad BCD785 is missed ( ceramic ) --this has been check in both the up to date e-cat ( used Web-link to see the latest ) and verified it is also missed in the USA e-cat using my special test Exploris access to the data base. So I know it is RIGHT.

So -- if you don't see all the flavors in pads --check -- you might have it on stock ....like this one --all THREE stores stock the BCD785!!

Want another example -
2003 Windstar BCD803 front pads do NOT list --- would Auto Barn catch this - since they stopped keeping BCD 803 in favour of BCD803's ...'ouch' if the staff don't ...
or this is missed - BCD 816 for front ads on 2003 Ford Focus ( see a pattern on MISSED Ceramic pads ?? )
or this is missed - 2000 Audi A6 rear pads BMD340A & GSD340A

============= late flash =========== solution to problem ?? =============
message from Brian Wiggs
A little more info relating to BCD pads not showing in Exploris and Weblink.

NOTE that the problem mentioned below did not affect J-CON or any other
UNIX-based system.

I just spoke with our Weblink folks, who explained that there was an issue
with the CARQUEST version of the October PartExpert DVD. So for the
Exploris and Weblink catalog servers, we had to reload the "non-CARQUEST"
DVD, which did not have the BCD update.

The November CARQUEST PartExpert DVD will be loaded to Exploris and to
Weblink
over the Thanksgiving weekend. This should put all systems in synch.

Thanks to everyone for your input on this particular issue.
Brian
====================================================

Note to all-- we have Nov CD for e-cat and will install tonight ( Tue ) -- please help me check these issues and see how many are solved with the new Nov data ... appreciate your help

the last few pages on our end of day -- clues ?

some times the last few pages on the end of day - normally sent to Greg H -- have some clues of problems --for example last weekend we found we didn't have the 'right combination' --- What does that mean -- well -- when head office adds a new line or sub-line -- it is important to know that the s/l ( sub-line) and billing schedules have been properly added to our computer.

Two problems -- s/l 10 in LTG - lights over $150 and a apparently new s/l in CPB #12 for weather stripping ... Both have now been corrected. Now - lets find out what's in these line codes ... ad how to sell them . An e-mail has been sent to Bart asking for more in on the weather stripping parts. The LTG is understood - if questions - see Greg H

not ALL pads are shown in E-cat -- a reminder ONE MORE TIME

We have mentioned this before - but we have to keep reminding you - ( that is - or until CQ starts listings all pads - but they are stubborn on this issue - for whatever reason ...)

Case in point -- Auto Barn has set the levels back on BMD459 and set the levels up on BCD 459 ...and they sell quite a few of the BMD459's .... BUT .... (isn't there always a BUT ) ... the ceramic pads are NOT listed in the e-cat !!!!!! That can cause a BIG PROBLEM with junior staff or customers trying to order from WEB-LINK

Look for more examples and list them in the comments section below this article.

Example 2002 Chev G2500 show properly ( thanks to Brian Wiggs info ) BMD459
but -- mine was 1999 Chev C3500 ( w/ rear drum brakes ) --didn't --
another BAD example is BCD 652 for 97 Ford Explorer ---the BCD part doesn't show in e-cat !!
and it made worse by Auto Barn dropping the BMD652 in favour of the BCD652
another is NO listing for MDL 559 for 96 Crown Vic front pads ( but you stock or will soon stock )
another MISSED is 98 Nissan Sentra front pads MDL 668
another missed is 2000 Expedition front pads MDL 702 and REAR pads MDL 711
another missed is 1996 Crown Vic rear pads MDL 674
another missed is 2000 Olds Bravada rear pads BSP D729
another missed is 2003 Ford Windstar front pads MDL803
another missed is 2004 PT Cruiser front pads MDL824

Have added extra stock in BSP for brake shoes -=- PLEASE !! watch for applications where they DO NOT show in e-cat.

We can two things ... .
1) we can link to something that does show -- like the FRI RS red shoe by putting this in the FRI RSxyz description '@BSP SLSxyz' You do NOT use the 'quote' mark -- but you must use the @ then the three digit line - then a SPACE and then the part number ...any thing other than this --won't work and will probably mean your POS (point of sale) screen will be in a error loop ( thus the saying 'close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades')
... 2) please tell Greg H and he will lobby for better e-cat data from Replex ( the makers of BSP shoes

We will be requesting these additional sku's as SLS in BSP -- and will force them on a special order if needed !!
RS263 RS446 RS473 RS519 RS538 RS559 RS569 RS581 RS582 RS593 RS636 RS657
RS659 RS675 RS696 RS720 RS723 RS745 BS760 BS781 BS784 BS791 BS795 RS357R BS538R RS583R RS704R RS705R

For other jobbers who read this --remember that FRI RS716 = BSP SLS 698
and FRO RS 703 = BSP SLS 714 --- both in stock and BOTH missed in e-cat - thus requiring the LINKAGE thru the description.

next week we will start the same process on adding - requesting OBVIOUS MISSED sku's in pads for BSP

otc 4504 and 4503

stumbled upon otc stinger numbers 4504 (metric bubble flaring tool) and 4503 (standard flaring tool) approximately 4 months ago, put them into stock and sales have been great. (4504 sold 11, 4503 sold 5) pricing is very reasonable at $34.43 otc for either kit. warehouse now stocks both, along with a nice lever bender 6515. maybe think about stocking and showing your customers.

sometimes we sell the WRONG horse ??

Sometimes we sell the WRONG horse .... gee ... you would think someone would tell us ....

Case in point - rough service bulbs

compare
CPS 81211 75 W ... to CLB 75 WRS
CPS 81212 100W ... to CLB 100WRS
CPS 81210 50 w .... to CLB .... ?? unknown at time of posting

Stores -- PLEASE re-set your stock levels and return any CPS you require. We are STRONGLY lobbying for these to be added to our bulk buy list. I have GUESSED at a qty break discount ... do you agree ---if not -- call Greg H with oyur idea's on how to sell more.

It is pretty bad when you screw up something as simple as a light bulb ...:-(

to order engine parts from ENGINE PARTS 1 ....soon ...

Peter in Toronto is working out details so we can order from ENGINE PARTS ONE. Greg H had called Mark Reynolds earlier this year to help get this started ...but things sure take time---to date we just acleld again and asked that our BESTBUY accounts be closed and proper CQ accounts opened ...stay tuned ...

Warehouse Clear-out sheet on tools & equipment

Last week I sent the salesmen a clear-out list of items in the Toronto warehouse. Greg from Auto Barns writes back that he is close to closing a sale on one of the items -- ask your salesman or store manager to see their copy of the list - in case you have an idea, too.

he CARS --they Keep a changin ....

General Motors Corp. may begin development work soon on a new rechargeable battery-electric motor hybrid car that would use an onboard internal-combustion engine as a generator to produce electricity to extend the range of the vehicle's power cells, GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said in an interview with auto industry trade publication Automotive News this week.

The car may be unveiled as a prototype next year and will not be an emissions-free vehicle, unlike GM's defunct EV1.

The prototype will run initially on power provided by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and will switch to electricity provided by the onboard gasoline motor or diesel-fueled generator when the battery charge runs out, according to a knowledgeable person within the company. The car would need to recharge twice per day and probably would have a battery range of 20 to 30 miles before needing to switch to electricity generated by the motor.

When is a circuit board --not a circuit board

The image is for MTM 70010 --we have added this to all stores --use it as a salesman 'whats new'. This is a known problem in Van's - see D&T ( Chris or Ryan ) for more details. These are hard to find in e-cat -- remember to use your PAPER cat ... we are trying to make the e-cat better - but that takes time. can you find the error ....

Every once in a while--there is an error. And we REALLY need you guys to THINK when you are billing something out.

For example Auto Barn billed out a PSC 20-50830V1 pump-- BUT -- it didn't have the Core ... attached to the part. SO -- there was NO CORE billed. We found this out when the customer called back and said - hey - is there a core on this or not .... and it was over $100!!

Here is what the story is. in J-Con the CORE is a separate UNIT. On our older systems the core was part of the part number. So - in J-Con you can have times where the PART NUMBER is NOT linked to the CORE NUMBER ... and that is bad.

We run a 2-20 inventory dump once a month and then at month end we will run programs that check for missing links ... but some times you sell things before we can re-link. PLEASE help us all- and help your profit sharing as well -- look for problems ... and let us know on anything you have a question on.

Want to see a part that didn't have a core linked -- see your store manager and look at his 2-20 for Oct -- look for the part in PSC ( see the part with a BLANK in the core field ... 20-54500 -- this has since been corrected.

what do yoiu know of www.carquestdirecthit,com ??

Have you looked at CARQUEST Direct Hit

It is a web based vehicle repair system that shops are starting to really like. For example Mercers from Wheatley On has recently mentioned that this web site has solved problems that another CD based solution didn't/couldn't. When time is money and the right fix found faster is extra profit for your shop - this is worthwhile looking at.

As Lary Goudge at the next training session what he thinks of it - he has a access and uses it.

Scrap batteries increased in value

With higher lead prices -- scrap batteries have also gone up from $2.00 to $2.50 for a typical car sized unit. Are you doing all you can to get the scrap batteries returned to your store? That can be a lot of extra PROFIT you can generate and you do keep 15% of that in your profit sharing bonuses ... want a bigger bonus -- get more scrap batteries returned to your store.

Please remember that all banks and government facilities will be closed Monday November 13th in observance of Remembrance Day.

Battery prices tied to LEAD prices

At a recent staff meeting we passed around the chart for COPPER -- well -- look at this chart for LEAD. We will probably see LEAD stay high until they stop needing so many BULLETS in the middle east.

New battery signs have been made for Auto Barn and D&T ( Petes declines --so how does the staff KNOW what batter has the FREE road side assistance ...hint --on the word.doc signs these batteries are in GREY background ...and how does the staff know the difference on CA and CCA ratings for batteries ,...as some customers get the misleading CA number from other sellers of batteries) ??

Bookmark this link >>> CARQUEST CHASSIS TRAINING
Take the quiz and get your $5.00 subway gift card --show it to Rhonda and she will match that $5.00. Hurry -- only first 2500 participants get it.

We have asked that they include Cdn provinces when you log-in -- I used Ohio when I did the first test. PLEASE remember your user name and password you pick ...hint....

There will be ( some day --not just now) a training modules for service writters and tech's --- watch for more details

Curious on what is in the US tool flyer ??

Click here >>>> *** CQ Tool Flyer link *** to see what is in the new USA CARQUEST tool & Equipment flyer. You will see some lines that are not yet available up here in Canada -- but if you see something that you would REALLY REALLY like -- drop a line to Dan.Lowrey@gpi.com and to Peter.McNally@gpi.com --oh sure -- CC me as well -- interested in what you see.

You might also find a few things that we HAVE -- but get overlooked --check the Toronto warehouse - see the F-9 in POS

Just what happened this last end of month in J-Con

Here is what I think happened -- ran end of month - last month - problem with customer history rolling for Auto Barn ( source Rhonda)

This End of Month - all 3 stores didn't run the customer history --and the parts ledger data ( parts history ) did roll either. So we ran the end of month DURING the business hours ... and that lead to REALLY SLOW POS actions --to the point that many thought their terminals or printers were frozen --- not so --they just only had a fraction of the CPU ( computer ) power and they had to wait

If we have another month like this --we could run the end of month early and run some checks to make sure all is well-- and if we have a problem --we can call the help desk which is open until 10:00 pm.

Morco --- errors and foul up's on shipping ?

Ken N wants this to me better know --= he is having a LOT of errors in special order shipping from Morco. PLEASE make a note of this fellow -- Mat Betrim -- Sales Manager at Morco -- ask for him on trying to figure out why you HAD a problem - 800-276-7827 ( order desk )

Mat will have a change -- they will INSIST that THEY do a stock check on every item special ordered by all CQ jobbers ( they do this now with Elsa & Linda on orders they call in

Mat will ask for a list of stores and contact names so when they do have a problem -they know who to call at that store ( this is on Doug McIntosh voice mail )

Mat will see if any request that comes in TOO LATE to be shipped Purolator - will try to go Cardinal ( for our stores ) -- so HINT -- do NOT request Purolator

Mat will watch --and should we get more orders --we can ask Rob Scott on possibility for cross dock shipping ( ps - note - that adds one day to order )

PLEASE let Ken or Greg H know if you have a problem in Morco --we want to make this better

Lankar/mitchell

If anyone has a customer that is using Lankar or Mitchell the "magic number" to make our list price match their's is Cost X 1.5385.This is assuming your customer is using a 35% margin (not markup)from cost to list which is what Auto Barn uses.

Greg...can you post on the blog.
I just ordered a power steering pump for a Ford tractor from A&I. I didn't know that they have them available in 2 lines. Identical part #'s except the "economy" line has a dash "e" suffix. I called to ask the difference. One is North
American, the other is offshore. Also got a little inside info from the guy on the order desk. He says do NOT sell the econo line of pump for Massey Ferguson units.

Bravo pads - made by Replex

Did you know that BSP pads are Canadian Made by Replex - a MAJOR aftermarket supplier to many other brake lines. They are a major producer of steel backing pads and their own friction mixes - and are one of very few to have their own on site testing lab.

Here is their latest Bravo flyer - you can download and print

Bravo Pad & Shoe list-06

We have been made aware that CARQUEST has stocked many sku's that we didn't know -- Greg G is going t o post more on that.

If you has some special unit -- they have a Toronto warehouse Doug Harden 877-328-0224 ....don;t use them if you are very tight for time --the first few times will probably be very much grief --especially until CARQUEST figure out how to tell us the 1500 sku's they don't list in their computer ...:-)

Here is info from Cdn sales manager and his contact -- FYI ---watch for more from Greg G on missing sku's that we will match to offset for crappy e-cat data.....

Dear Mr. Henderson,
It was a pleasure speaking with you. In regards to our conversation, please find enclosed a PDF file containing a new brochure for the Carquest Bravo friction line.

Regarding drum brake shoe part numbers S703 and S714 they are interchangeable.
Thank you very much for your support.

Keystone price comparisons -- Thanks Auto Barn

Auto Barn is sending photo copies of the Keystone invoice and stapled price compare to the 'new' account that for the most part seems to be higher. IF other stores could also do that --"that would be a good thing" to quote Martha Stewart.

When we get 10 or so -- I will forward on to Toronto. Please concentrate on the items more than $100 if you can. Thanks --with your help we can FIX this problem and make it better for all.

Keystone and others with US to Cdn currency issues

Ryan asked ....
Just to add a small footnote, we have an additional issue here; and any border town for that matter. With our dollar being so good right now I find that a lot of Speed and Custom enthusiasts are crossing the border and saving a lot of money. We need to keep that in the back of mind when we talk about pricing.

So I asked Michael at keystone ( National Accounts Manager) ....
Can you explain if you adjust prices for US currency changes? Do you find this cross boarder shopping to be an issue to avoid PST-GST mainly - or do we have issues on US to Cdn currency issues?

Michael writes back ....
Cross border shopping becomes more of an issue the closer our two
currencies get to parity. Often individuals can smuggle something
across the border without paying taxes and duties (something we
obviously can't avoid). We do adjust our prices when there are
fluctuations in the exchange rate. We change it as necessary, which is
usually about 3-5 times a year. Right now we are using 1.156, and as of
today the exchange rate is 1.139. What most people fail to recognize
that you can't actually buy money (cash or Visa) at the bank rate. The
buy rate is usually about 4% higher. So, we are actually cheaper than
the (actual) exchange rate. Also, where are they going to go if they
have a problem? Where will they get the support for the product? If
they forgot to get a part are they going to order it from the US? The
cross border issue will always be there (and internet too). As a bricks
& mortar business you need to convince your customers why buying from
you is better, even if it costs more money. Some people will always be
willing to spend $50 in gas and a half a day to save $50 of the price of
their manifold. They'll also tell all their friends what a good deal
they got. Most people only do this once or twice until they realize
it's not the better way.

Does this help? The fact that Keystone is using a 'fair' US currency exchange rate is appreciated. Comments appreciated.

Truckin accounts

Remember accounts 41,42,43 depending on your store. These are for truck drivers that have a cab card.If you do not know how to use a cab card call Me or any of the AutoBarn staff and we will explain it to you.We find that we get a lot repeat customers because we have their info in our system (preferred customer same as a farmer). They do not pay PST.

LANKAR DEMO

Here is a note from Barry ( Greg Guyitt is also testing the Lankar system as well-- )

I had a demo from Brigitte of Lankar today. They have a FREE version of their program available. The main goal of this Lite program is to reach the shops that are still writing invoices.
It will allow them to electronically create invoices, keep customer-vehicle-history records and, for a $25.00 fee ( NOTE from GREG H = I think Barry is wrong on this- the CQ ordering os included --but if you want ANOTHER source - then additional set-ups cost extra ) , allow them to order from Carquest on-line. There is a $149.00/year support fee if the customer wants to order on-line. If they don‚t need on-line ordering they can continue to use the program for no charge. The support fee also allows them to use the hotline for any questions or problems relating to the Lankar program. The free version is designed to give something of value to a shop and hopefully, make them want to move up to the full-blown version.

The full-blown version has a lot of features not in the Lite program.
- Full inventory
- Customer follow-up and marketing
- Accounting, up to, but not including, a trial balance.

Greg H asked me to rate it on a scale of one to ten. My initial reaction is Mitchell would be a 7 and Lankar would be a 9.

The price for the full-blown package is $1299 plus $450 for a multi-user. Support is $300 a year. Lankar will give 6 months interest-free for the initial installation. They will give you all the assistance you need to get the program running to your satisfaction.

Regards
Barry Davidson

MSJ wins North American shop award

The CQ link posted this ... sharing here --way to go john Sawatsky and Windsor ....
====================================================================
John Sawatsky Of Windsor, Ontario Named
2006 CARQUEST Excellence Award Winner

RALEIGH, NC (Oct. 9, 2006) -- John Sawatsky, owner of MSJ Automotive Services Ltd. in Windsor, Ontario, has been named the 2006 CARQUEST Excellence Award Winner. He was presented the award Oct. 6 in Orlando, Fla.

The CARQUEST Excellence Award seeks to recognize the independent automobile service business that, through the course of everyday service excellence, exemplifies the professionalism necessary to build public understanding and respect for people working in the auto service industry today.

MSJ is a 9,000 square foot repair facility located in Windsor, Ontario. Along with a repair facility, it has an additional 3,000 square foot building dedicated to emission testing. MSJ employs 12 with 6 licensed technicians and 3 apprentices and is a member of the TECH-NET Professional Auto Service program, which is one of the many solutions CARQUEST Auto Parts provides Sawatsky for his business.

In the November 2005 SSGM Magazine, Sawatsky said, "The (TECH-NET) banner program provides us with an image and gives us a standard to maintain. We have a local Essex County council set up by myself and the local CARQUEST stores, and we meet here three or four times a year to bring everyone up to speed on what TECH-NET is doing. We share ideas and learn what our peers are doing. The image issue is key. Shops need to consistently raise the bar and improve our shops year over year. The worst thing we can do is stand still. The automakers aren't standing still and we can't either."

DNS e-cat -- questionbale logic punishes sloppy users

DNS e-cat requires users to remember to LOG-OUT after using .... hmm ... I don't know about you ...but the ONLY site I ever absolutely remember to log-out is internet banking --all others I just close the window and assume the software does it then or at least is smart enough to 'TIME OUT'

Well -- DNS e-cat doesn't seem to do either ... as a result you will find that you get an error saying that all users have been used ...

E-mail Gislain Rondeau ..... grondeau@dns-2000.com and she can re-set your stores connection. We have PLEADED with them to get this 'dumb' error fixed ( along with support for tab browsers like Firefox )

D&T has run out of users twice ....that I know of ....:-(

Lankar LITE shop software available

The stores have received several demo CD's for Lankar LITE -- a low cost software option. We have asked for more info from Lankar and asked them to feel free to answer with comments ( so check comments - thanks )

Will await more feedback from staff and salesmen once they get a chance to throw the CD in and play -- Barry --can you pass on a comment at some point if-when you get a feel for it.

Have asked Lankar for a comparison chart of features to their normal software and to Mitchell1

Lankar

Stay tuned.....

Right to Reapir --- **** very important ****

The article from the recent AIA publication - DRIVE is available for download and further use -- click on the link below. IMPORTANT for us all!!

Click here for RIGHT TO REPAIR article

Car Care service intervals

Ryan sent me a Car Care service interval page - looks pretty good - especially in the hands of a show that WANTS to promote preventative maintenance ... I printed 3 colour copies and 20 B&W for all stores. Ryan & I have original pdf as well if you want to forward as e-mail. I will post on Worldpac's forum ( CARQUEST JOBBER ) as another place to grab a copy ... this forum required password to enter.

Click here to see FULL PAGE service Schedule (yes - you can save this and re-print)

CAR CARE SAFETY BLITZ

TECH TIRE is hosting a Car Care Safety Ralley on Saturday October 14th 11:am - 1pm. Please make everyone that you know aware of this. Anything that we can do to ensure that this is a success is appreciated.

test - how to link a URL

just a test to see if this is how to link a URL so when you click on it -- you go to the new page

Auto Barn's home page

ah hay --it works ... on third try .... for me that's a near record - call Greg and I can send your a sample to learn from - requires some HTML knowledge - go to any simple web page and look at source ( gasp ...)

Gerry Leaman wants co-operation on planning KYB training

Gerry Leaman is looking for the salesman and store managers to cooperate and call him to arrange time to meet to overview new KYB program --to meet with shop owners to explain program - then to meet with shop tech's to get plan into action ... the first step is the store manager calling Gerry and setting a date for their store .... please

Starting Fluid (Ether Shortage)

Seen on US CQ-LINK ( anyone seen this on the CDN link yet ?? )

FYI - There have been worldwide shortages of ether now for over two years. Ether has many usages including the making of ammunitions and the use of a starting agent for gas and diesel engines. There are only a few world producers and only two in the Unites States, which are producing at or near capacity at this time. Although our supplier did not expect the shortages to be as bad as it currently is we feel this is temporary. We will continue to work with our supplier on alternative sources but will be short on this product for the next couple of weeks.

Managers- watch your anti-freeze stock

With the recent BLIND SIDE on the WWAF price increase --it reminds us to have our managers monitor your stock requirements on order skid qty's as required. For example I just mentioned to Ryan that he should get one more skid of rad a/f ... especially since there is NO guarantee the price will stay after Oct 13th ( or whenever the special stops again). Keep an eye on your stock ....

CQ University temporily off the air

Some of you had access to CARQUEST university for training courses ... this has been shut down and a new program is being rolled out. Details should follow in a month ( or two ?). JV stores have access to the new program - so if you are by a JV store - like Windsor -- go havea look ...eventually us independents will get it.

Thanksgiving Holiday

Please remember when you open your stores on Tuesday, October 10th to change your EOD status. If you don't remember EOD will not run that night.

Everyone have a good holiday.

Right to Repair - article of interest

Please see the summer-fall issue of 'The Voice' - an AIA publication that arrived recently ( if your store didn't get a copy - call Greg H to see why - we now have all stores registered as members for AIA )

On page 4 there is a good article on the battle for the RIGHT TO REPAIR ... we have asked AIA for a pdf copy of this so we can forward to our customers - in the mean time --check out the paper copy

Brian Taylor ---goes to the DARK SIDE --

An update - we have to correct ...the recent appointments ... we had Brian Taylor as General Manager Ontario - which covered JV and associate stores ... we stand corrected ... Brian has gone to the DARK SIDE ...he is GM for JV's only ...we wish him the best and with any good luck he can return from the DARK SIDE to enjoy the spirit of the independent jobber side soon ...:-)

Hi Speed Debit

BIG NEWS FLASH

D&T has gone hi speed with their debit machines. Our machines are now Beer Store fast.

A&I products - set line code

We have set an X line code for A&I Products so we can go ahead and learn this line. We are lobbying for Toronto to support A&I like they do with Keystone --but until then we will continue to learn on our pace. Ken at D&T is the best trained so far -if you have questions - ask Ken. Line code to use is XAI

Jot these numbers down
800-268-5087 is a order line # -- you can also get transfered back from Iowa to Woodstock to talk with Russ Philips Ext #2052 or Lionel #2051. Our rep is Dennis McCutchen - mobile # 519-536-1993

The managers have our margin logic as a test - see them. The web site is pretty good. The biggest problem -is that the product opens up a whole new section that we haven't done much with - it will take time to be good at a line like this - and it takes effort. Dennis will be down early next week and will be seeing all the stores -- watch for more details.

Note --they quote prices in US dollars - to which we need to add on the fixed monthly currency surcharge -for Oct is is 1.13 and in Sept is was 1.12 ( 12% more ) - which seems pretty fair way to do it.

Petes updates BRG 2nd line hub bearings - again

Petes Paint has added movement code 1 thru 3 in MevoTech hub bearings ... if you think your store should also have the choice of two brands -- have your store manager call Greg H and it can be done.

How safe is our Oil Dri ??

We had a call form another source claiming to have 'silica free' oil dri as well as their 'normal' oil dri ... this made us ask the question to Peter McNally .... do we need a silica free oil dri

Well -it turns out that we indeed have the safer product ... anything with less than a content 0.1% of crystalline silica and more is NOT subject to the whmis act ... anything that os over this --IS subject to the whmis act

Here are some data from Oil Dri Canada -- your salesman and managers will have the original .doc version is someone wants a paper copy.

===================================
What is crystalline silica?
>>>>>Crystalline silica is one of the most common mineral on earth. The form mostly seen is quartz (beach sand).

What is the regulation concerning the crystalline silica?
>>>>>In Canada, the regulation says that a content 0.1% of crystalline silica and more is subject to the whmis act.

Crystalline silica in Oil Dri floor absorbents?
>>>>>>Even if crystalline silica is a component of the clay, the content of respirable dust is under 0.1% of the total weight. In normal conditions, the naturally-occurring crystalline silica as quartz is in fact below 0.1mg/m3. It is in fact safe to use.

Why a warning on the bag?
>>>>>It is a reminder that it is possible to generate dust in the air while using this product, just like it is possible to be in contact with a solvent while pouring it. In both cases, the answer is to act carefully.
======================================
More information on the silica content of our floor absorbents.

Oil Dri Industrial Floor Absorbent is made of 100% ground clay from Mississippi. It is a natural product. (No additives) An important fact is that clay (floor absorbent) may generate dust. The physical content of respirable dust in the product is under 0.1 % of the total weight.

It is clear that under conditions of normal use, exposure to respirable crystalline silica from this product is below the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit and the ACGIH Threshold Limit Value.

It is a fact that silica is causing eye and respiratory irritations, like sand at the beach (sand is silica). An adequate ventilation in plant or the use of approved protection will reduce the exposure.

***** We are screening our product at different steps in the process. That technique is reducing the dust content for a safer product. ****** ( starts by GH )

The use of that product will generate less contact with dust then the use of a product like Eagle Pitcher. It is a fact that the hardness of the granule will prevent slaking and at the same time,it will reduce the level of dust generated by attrition. The Eagle Pitcher is generating more dust since it has a lower resistance. (hardness)

List of end-users:

Alcan Canada Hydro-Québec
General Motors Canadair
Bombardier(Valcourt) Monsanto
National Defense ABB
Quebecor Ottawa-Carleton Transit Commission
This is a short list of Oil Dri floor absorbent users.

Just another example of how our product is the higher end product -and that others can always have something cheaper and more dangerous ( less screening to remove dust )

Good selling

chassis training = free food

Could not resist --to see if I can publish this BEFORE Ryan. Ryan forwarded an e-mail ( not a BLOG entry ?? ) on www.carquestchassistraining.com

here is part of what you can see --this is also a site for our customers

So - Ryan -- where was the BLOG info. (big smile)

ASE counterman testing - see Jobber News

in Sept issue of Jobber News - page 42 - they have a summary of the type of questions asked on the ASE counterman training exam ... check it out. Good luck t these writing it for the first time or updating their certificate ( to the old ones ). This year the exam is at St Clair college. Some of the older staff have never quite forgiven Greg H for booking in Detroit years ago before ASE came to Canada - it wasn't in the nicest part of town as it turns out.

new positions at CQ in Toronto

Here are the changes - Brian Taylor steps up to fill the vacant position left by Steve Gushie after he became President ... Brian is General Manager - Ontario and all JV and associate issues stop at his desk.

So that creates a vacant position for 'Sales Manager - Independent Sales' - that is taken by Doug McIntosh

So that in turn creates a vacant position for Finance Director - that is taken by Eric Boutin. Most of you have not meet Eric, yet -- but with our year end soon we will be one of this first reviews one might think - for late in Nov.

Congatulations to all

using an internet e-cat --- need to log out when done ?

Received a note from DNS ( starters and alternators ) reminding us that we need to LOG OUT when done with their internet e-cat. Hold on - that can be a problem ... I for one rarely have developed a habit of doing this other that on important sites --like internet banking.

But - if you can remember -- try to log-out when you are done. I have to assume that closing the window is the same as logging out. We have e-mailed question to DNS.

Price Breaks in Exploris - for WEB-LINK to see

Once we go Exploris - the customers will see the price breaks they have set on their accounts --we had the Windsor store do a test so we could see what it looks like -- set up a 'test' on B85515 oil filter ... if you look up this on web-link and hold curser on the 'Q' beside the price - a small box opens up and the price break info shows.

TWO seperate part numbers in WorldPac

Adam writes .....Any idea why when I use world pac, the numbers I come up with are not the same numbers that DT gets? An example is a 1998 Volvo S70 Turbo (either 2.3 or 2.5, doesn't matter) the muffler number I get is a 291-221, which is the Bosal number. DT gets an h5000-59779-bsl, which crosses to the number I get. Why is the numbering system different? This makes it very difficult to order a part, and pointless for me to even look it up, because DT just ends up looking it up anyways to find the right part number.

The problem we have -- is the first number that Adam sees is a better number - but in many cases is it a LONGER number and it exceeds the capacity of J-Con. In the example he listed - it is actually a shorter number .... but in other cases it is the OEM # ... our 'shorter # shows the supplier and a computer #. This may change with Exploris at some point??

This question is worth repeating for all our understandings - watch for more details

prompt feedback helps Worldpac and us

Joe at Autobarn has an issue with Toyota Echo and pricing ---we told Jim Osborne and in approx. 45 days ( the correction will happen right away at WP --but we won;t see it in our system until the next CD comes -hence the 45 days ) we will see the problem fixed ...Jim says -- even if they have to sell below cost ... this will prompt them to look at sourcing and eventually find the better source.

Keep those cards and letters coming -- WorldPac is listening. What can you do to make WP better?

missing cross reference numbers in FILTERS in e-cat

Both Abe and Joe have asked me what the story is n the missing cross reference numbers for Filters in the e-cat interchange. An error caused the interchange for filters to be 'blown out' -it will be back in on Oct e-cat update says Brian Wiggs at Raleigh -- use paper until then --sorry for inconvenience says Brian.

Moneris

Apparently Moneris is in negotiations with Carquest regarding our rental rates and discount fees. They are also discussing the gift card program that Moneris offers. Unfortunately it will not be up and running for this holiday season but new competitive pricing should be in place for early spring of next year. At that time we can look into getting gift cards to replace our current paper gift certificate. I will keep you posted on any new developments.

Pelee Island Trip on Sunday, Oct 1st

Just a reminder to any D & T staff who are going to PeleeIsland on Sunday. We will be taking the 10:00am boat fromKingsville (suggest being at the dock by 9:30) and coming back on the 6:00pm boat. (about 1-1/2 hr boat ride each way)Tom and Mary will pick us up at the dock and bring us back to their place -- probably in the back of a pick-up. Mary asked that we bring chips, pretzels, etc and if anybody makes a mean spinach dip maybe they could volunteer their services. Also bring whatever you plan to drink for that day. Beyond that, they are taking care of everything else. As of right now we have 13 people going. See you Sunday.
